Pitchpole Thursday…uh…it is Thursday isn’t it?

by on Mar.13, 2009, under Miscellaneous

Second edition and I already missed Thursday!  Well, better late than never.  I’ve actually been the guy swiging around the front of one of these tiny little misunderstood boats.  Unlike the catamarans we typically race, this type of boat does not go quite fast enough for a 180lb man to be thrown clear…the kid here was fortunate he was a little lighter!

Holy Crap!!!!!! You’ve updated your blog. What took you so long?

Yes, yes…I know.  I had a period there where I put a lot of time and effort into my career (yes, I have a day job) and expanded/invested in the home business my wife and I run.  That’s settling down a little now and I felt it was time to get back in here…who knows!, I might even get to that “shooting gelcoat” part 2 soon now that teamseacts.com is syndicated now.

Beauty is in the Eyre of the Beholder

by on Mar.03, 2009, under Miscellaneous

Lake Eyre Yacht Club in Australia is about to set sail again!  Ok, so you probably have never heard of Lake Eyre Yacht Club and that’s understandable.  The club mostly sits dormant for years at a time far inland and 15 meters below sea level in Australia.  A few rustic structures wait patiently in the blistering dry heat for the  trickle of runoff water from far away.  Every few years enough trickles in to slowly fill their remote shallow lake bed allowing them to set sail and race again.  Even better  (and you should have expected this); they’re catamaran sailors!

The lake is only filling again because of the recent heavy rains that devastated Queensland with floods.  The water is making a 1300 kilometer (800 mile) journey to fill up the salty lake bed and once the basin is filled, the water is said to be so briny that anything that protrudes from the lake is almost immediately encapsulated with salt.  For reasons yet unrevealed to this author, the lake is also covered with a pink oily sheen.  Race on catamaran brethren!…read more at Sail-World.com and see more photos at Mikewilkinsphotography.com
