Do Over

Gosh I hate titling a post that way. The second half of the rudder mold did not come out well. It appears that I applied the gelcoat far to thick and it got too hot causing the PVA to outgas and causing the gelcoat to lift at the trailing edge of the rudder. It is not salvageable. The first half of the mold is gorgeous…I’ll have to start over on the second half….spraying that gelcoat isn’t looking so bad now.

Just a thought Jake:
I have brushed Gel Coat on molds many times with great success. Although, one time I was trying to get it just right for too long and pulled the Gel Coat from the part. It looked exactly as you described. pulled of the sharpest edge worst. You do not get to play with it for very long. You would have to be pretty heavy handed with the catalyst to get too much in the Gel Coat which takes so much already. It thickens pretty quickly and starts sticking to the brush better than sticking to the well waxed part.
Hope you have better luck on the next try.
Later,
Dan
