The smell yesterday…

by on Jul.13, 2006, under One Meter

It was the smell of victory! Everything hardened nicely and the PVA was much easier to remove than I thought it would be – PVA over air-inhibited gel coat is the way to go for sure! I wetsanded the plug and base with 400 grit and within about 45 minutes had removed all the orange peel. I then went over everything with 600 grit. I’m debating a little about whether or not to polish the plug up with rubbing compound or if I should just wax it as it, PVA over it, and lay up the mold. I’ll have to think about that tomorrow. The plan is to tidy up the shop tomorrow evening and prepare to lay up the mold starting Saturday morning. Sorry – no pictures tonight…there’s only so much sanding you can capture with a camera.

Plug Looks Great!!! Just wondering if you guys are trying to conform to the one meter rule. If so it appears to be awsome. I am currently in the design phase of my one meter, which should displace arround 5.25lbs with 4.2 of that in the keel. I am also going to try and exploit the no rotating mast rule for the US one meter, with only a swinging boom for a swing rig. Email me and i can send you some renderings of what I am hoping for. I hope to have my plug milled by a friend with a cnc router, I hope it comes out as nice as that.

    Nate,

Yes, it’s going to be a US One meter. We haven’t weighed the radio gear yet but we’re shooting for some very similar figures and I’ve drawn up a 3lb and a 4lb bulb to a NACA profile. At this point, we’re just trying to build the hull and rigging to be as light as possible. We’re figuring that instead of changing out sail plans and masts for different wind strengths that we change out the keel. The keel will be mouned through a trunk and have a single screw that holds in in the boat. If the wind changes, you just take out the one screw and slip in a heavier or lighter keel.

I hope you’ll keep us updated (email forthcoming).
